Weddings at War Memorial Chapel and the Duck Pond

War Memorial Chapel is available to members of the Virginia Tech Community for weddings and special events, Tuesday through Saturday. The Chapel will not be available for use during university-observed holidays or on days when Virginia Tech hosts home football games. We currently do not host wedding receptions in the chapel or any of our major venue spaces on campus.

Individuals requesting the use of the War Memorial Chapel or the Duck Pond for a wedding must be affiliated with Virginia Tech as student, faculty, staff, or alumni. Affiliates can be brides, grooms, members of the wedding party, or a parent of the individuals getting married.

As with other facilities that host weddings, the prime dates and times (between April and August) are the first to be reserved. You are more likely to get ideal dates and times if you book your event at least six months to one year in advance.

Additionally, the Duck Pond is available to use for ceremonies, and receptions. Costs and specifications vary and can be found below. If you are interested in reserving one of our venues, fill out the reservation form below and email it to the Event Planning Office.

Reservation Information

  • Reservations must include a minimum of two hours dedicated to the ceremony and one hour for the rehearsal. Rehearsals are normally scheduled the day prior to the ceremony.
  • Reservations must be booked a minimum 45 business days prior to the event date.
  • A $150 non-refundable deposit is required for special events and wedding reservations.
  • An experienced coordinator is required for all weddings. The Chapel staff can perform this function for a fee of $150. However, you are free to use someone else to fill this role. The coordinator cues the musicians, lines up the participants, signals everyone when to walk down aisle, coordinates with the officiant and photographer, and coordinates the rehearsal and the ceremony. This person cannot be the officiant or anyone who is a part of the processional.

Technical Specifications

  • The Chapel's maximum seating capacity is 260 people.
  • Approximately 200 people may be comfortably seated in the pews
  • There are an additional 48 chairs available around the perimeter.
  • There are 28 pews consisting of 14 on either side of the aisle.
  • The wooden rails (the altar rails) on each side of the front of the Chapel are 17 feet in length
  • The brass rails on each side of the rear of the Chapel (near the front entrance) are 10 feet, 8 inches in length.
  • The Chapel aisle is 45 feet in length.
  • The top of the altar is 8 feet by 2 1/2 feet.

Production Services

Insurance

Insurance is required for all weddings and similar events. Certificates of insurance must have a minimum general liability coverage amount of $500,000; the certificate must list “Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,” the “Commonwealth of Virginia,” and “War Memorial Chapel” as certificate holders and additional insured; and the certificate must include the organization name, event date(s), and location(s) in the description area. Certificates of insurance must be submitted no later than 21 business days prior to the event. If the certificate is not received by the Event Planning Office, the event cannot occur.

Pricing

  • The cost to book the inside of the Chapel is an hourly rate based on university affiliation.
  • Students: $65 per hour
  • Alumni: $100 per hour
  • University Affiliates: $100 per hour
  • The Chapel court (roof) is also available for $50 per day in addition to the applicable hourly rate listed above (the inside of the Chapel is automatically booked as a rain site).

Rentals

Chairs and tables can be rented from Student Engagement and Campus Life for use on the Chapel roof, but the client must pick up, set up, and drop off themselves.

Reservation Guidelines

  • The Duck Pond is available to use for ceremonies, receptions, and special events. There are three different Duck Pond packages for weddings: the Amphitheater and Field; the Gazebo only; or the Amphitheater, Field, and Gazebo.
  • In order to book the space, you must fill out the form below and return it to our office. Duck Pond wedding and special event reservations must be booked a minimum of 45 business days prior to the event date.

Technical Specifications

  • The Gazebo can fit no more than 110 people.
  • The Amphitheater can fit 400 people
  • The Field can fit 400+ people.
  • Amplification for the duck pond is as follows:
  • Sunday-Thursday amplification is not allowed
  • Friday amplification is allowed between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
  • Saturday amplification is allowed between the hours of 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.
